Danny McGowan the Strategic Organiser at Nautilus International, the only trade union and professional association operating globally for superyacht crew, has reacted to sensationalist press coverage of the superyacht industry in the mainstream media.
Of that coverage in The Guardian, The Mirror and Daily Mailhe says “The media has taken an interest in the unions successful work for the crew of Indian Empress and on the Union’s work for members in other cases.”
He adds, “Some of the reporting, as you might expect, has been sensationalist. Other aspects of the reporting can be recognised as highly accurate. However, whilst the industry is in the spotlight, we would urge all of our members working onboard superyachts – or shoreside – to discuss the benefits of Nautilus membership with your colleagues and advise them to join us.”
Often someone’s only reason for not becoming a member is that nobody has asked them.
The union is beginning to see approaches from companies within the industry that wish to work with Nautilus in order to improve standards for everyone.
However, McGowan says, “The most effective way for us to create change together is by individuals joining us. As the only trade union and professional association operating globally for superyacht crew, our benefits and protections are unrivalled by any other organisation, and those individuals who are not yet members of the Union must know that they need to become a Nautilus member in advance of encountering an issue to be covered by those benefits.
