Is Hydra a Spooky Looking Jetski?

From a distance, it looks like a jet ski that’s lost its rider but it is in fact the next stage in superyacht security.

5G International Inc, of Florida, USA and the yacht management company Al Seer Marine based in Abu Dhabi, UAE have joined forces to design and produce a remote controlled and autonomous robotic boat often referred to a Roboat

Unmanned Surface Vessels (USV) such as these provide security through sea and coastal surveillance.

This one the Hydra 4m RHIB was first shown to the public at the IDEX Exhibition in Abu Dhabi in 2013.

It has a top speed of 50+ knots and is expected to be available during 2015.

The unique, unmanned operation of such Roboats allows investigation, interrogation and observation at a significant distance up to 10 km from a mother ship depending always on antenna height and the range can be extended using satcoms.

By delivering critical, advanced warning of possible hostile intent, the USV affords opportunity for appropriate action to be taken.

Almost 14 feet long and just over 5 feet wide, the Hydra can carry up to 550 pounds of sensors, including cameras, radar, and sonar, all of which can screen for submarines and other incoming vessels in nearby waters.

It will be able to patrol for durations of around 21 hours before refuelling and two Hydras can be controlled remotely at once.
