Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the MYBA Charter Show was for its second outing hosted at OneOcean Port Vell with both good and bad reviews
This year the show welcomed industry leaders in the superyacht world including Burgess Yachts, Camper & Nicholson, Thompson Westwood & White Yachts and Fraser Worldwide to the marina, who all showcased a stunning fleet of yachts available for charter in 2018.
Another highlight of the show was the announcement that Fraser Yachts, the world’s leading full-service yachting company, has chosen OneOcean Port Vell as the site of their new office space in Spain.
At this years event 53 yachts participated in the Show, which translates into 2521 linear metres versus the 2437.9 linear metres of 2017.
The total gross tonnes of the yachts is 32.167 which also represents an increase from last year’s 29,000 gross tonnes.
592 brokers and CAs, of which 265 are MYBA Members, inspected and appraised the yachts on display. That’s almost 100 more than 2017, which saw 495 enter the gates of the Show!
There were 540 crew members who worked hard to ensure the success of the Show and 96 exhibitor stands that showcased ancillary services that the market has to offer.
The total number of attendees was 1885.
The yachts were the true protagonists but the Quay Party night, that was held for the first time, also contributed to creating social media content
The Superyacht Chefs’ Competition, sponsored by Yachts International and World Wine Sevices, welcomed a new competition for interior crew. The “Meet & Greet” competition was well received and is set to become one more highlight of the Show as it pays tribute to the importance of creating an excellent first impression.
According to the talented and very demanding panel of judges this year’s Competition has set a new benchmark. Artistic tablescapes, inspired dishes and creative presentations have made the judging process a difficult one. As the prize giving ceremony took place after the sounding of the horns, the names of the chefs that have won one of the coveted places on the podium will be announced shortly.
New this year was the introduction of the “All Hands on Deck” competition, which called for deck crew to present their ideas on how to entertain guests in challenging situations. Entries were extremely creative and the judges here also faced quite a challenge.
Over the course of the four day show, attendees enjoyed yacht viewings, competitions and a visit from The President of Puertos del Estado, Mr. José Llorca, together with Mr. Sixte Cambra, President of the Port of Barcelona and Mr. Jose Alberto Carbonell, Director General of the Port of Barcelona accompanied by members of the steering committee of MYBA and OneOcean Port Vell.
But the show was marred by reports of violent robberies and petty thefts, which are becoming a feature of life in and around Barcelona.
